Over the past few weeks, Pastor Randy has been preaching from his series entitled “iWant” to prepare us for Christmas. As I listened to the messages, I couldn’t help but wonder if God had a Christmas wish list, what would be on it?
Last Wednesday night, Deborah Jones and I taught the Pre-K and Kindergarten kids and had a great time celebrating the true meaning of Christmas with them. As they arrived, we made play dough creations of things that reminded of us of Christmas. There were Christmas cookies, trees, baby Jesus and LOTS of snowmen (and my heartfelt giggles along the way)!
We moved into our group time and shared an activity with them called “What God Wants for Christmas.” The activity box contains a book of the Biblical Christmas Story and 7 small boxes that are opened as the story unfolds. The first 6 boxes contained small figurines of Biblical people from the storytellers who give their account of what happened when Christ was born. As I read the story, Ms. Deborah opened each box right on cue… the Angel Gabriel, followed by Mary, next was Joseph, and finally the most anticipated (and cheered for) “BABY JESUS!!!” A shepherd and then wise men were found in boxes 5 & 6. By this time, the kids couldn’t wait to find out what could be in box #7. The story read that in the final box, they would see what God wanted for Christmas. As each child opened and quietly peeked in the box, they saw their own reflection, as a mirror was inside the box. Slowly, these precious kids realized that all God wants for Christmas is US!! No toys, no iPods or ANYTHING else. Their sweet little faces were absolutely precious with their tender smiles.
Yes, all He wants is us! AS that night ended, I was reminded that ALL we need is Him!
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. -Luke 2:11
